I played a small part but was delighted to have the time of my life in that Test match.

‘When Laxman and Dravid walked out to bat on the fourth morning, I took my seat outside the dressing room, padded up. I was slotted to go in next. I remained in that position the entire day.’

‘To tell you the truth, my life was on the line. I had to stand there with my eyes wide open, more than double, four times wider, for every ball. I didn’t want any decision to be wrong.’

Although the Eden Gardens game turned out to be his last Test match, Venkatapathy Raju has no regrets. ‘I feel great to be part of that match.’

“I will never forget the Test. I will never forget the noise at the fall of Australia’s last wicket,” recalls John Wright.
